What is Nipple Augmentation Surgery?

Nipple augmentation surgery, often performed alongside with breast augmentation, is a procedure that allows you to alter the size of your nipples. During a nipple augmentation, Dr. Takowsky will enlarge your nipple to coincide with the size and shape of your breast.

Nipple enlargements are a fairly simple procedure. They are usually completed in one office visit, and they are performed in our office as an outpatient procedure. We use many techniques for nipple reconstruction, depending on your unique anatomy.

The new nipple might be created using tissue grafts from other parts of the body with fat and cartilage flaps to increase its size. In some cases, we might suggest tattooing for natural color pigmentation. After your surgery, you can go back to your routine activities, but you should avoid exercise and heavy lifting, until the incisions are healed.

Most candidates are eligible for nipple augmentation surgery, no matter their nipple size. However, Dr. Takowsky will still need to assess your anatomy before moving ahead with surgery, as certain conditions might make you ineligible.

Nipple Eversion Surgery to Treat Inverted Nipple

The most common candidates for corrective nipple surgery suffer from inverted nipples. Inverted nipples occur when your nipples point inwardly, instead of outward. One in ten women have inverted nipples, or “shy nipples.” Inverted nipples can cause self-esteem issues, as well as inhibit your ability to breastfeed. Nipple eversion treatments can correct your inverted nipples by stretching the internal connective tissue that is pulling the nipple and making it concave.

Typically, the eversion procedure is performed with a local anesthetic. A small incision is made in the areola to access the connective fibers. The nipple is then placed in an outward position and held in place using sutures. The sutures dissolve as the breast tissue heals, while the nipples remain pointing outward. Nipple eversion surgery can preserve nearby milk ducts to maintain a patient's ability to breastfeed in the future.

Nipple and areola reconstruction can also be performed to create nipples, if they are missing due to mastectomy, injury or a congenital defect. This treatment is often the final step in breast reconstruction surgery, where the nipple is formed after the breast mound has settled into place. This way, the new nipple matches the appearance and position of the natural one.

Areola & Nipple Reduction Surgery

Nipple reduction surgery can make your long, large, or overly distended nipples appear more attractive. Age, weight loss, genetics, or breastfeeding can have a negative impact on the size of your nipples. Nipple reduction surgery is common in patients that desire smaller areolas and perkier nipples.

Nipple reduction surgery is performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure, taking around an hour to complete. The first part of the procedure is making a small incision around the outline of the nipple or areola. Then, excess tissue in the area will be removed, and the area will be stitched and dressed with gauze. To promote better healing, you will be given a surgical bra to hold the breast in place and special home care instructions.

You should avoid strenuous exercises for about 2-3 weeks after surgery, so you should plan your exercise routine with us ahead of time.

Benefits of Nipple Correction Surgery

There are many reasons you might elect for nipple augmentation surgery. For one, it is a permanent solution to misshapen or abnormally sized nipples. Some of the most common benefits, include:
  • Better nipple to breast ratio
  • More symmetrical nipples and breasts
  • Reverses the effects of gravity for a more youthful appearance
  • Natural looking nipple shape
  • Wear whatever you want after healing
