What is Thigh Lift Surgery?

Thigh lift surgery is a procedure that contours thigh shape by removing excess skin and fat from the inner or outer thigh. Thigh lift procedures are fairly simple, taking between 2 to 3 hours. This is an outpatient procedure, performed under general anesthesia.

In your initial consultation, Dr. Takowsky will assess your unique body composition to come up with treatment techniques for your thigh lift surgery. We will use different incision patterns, depending on the targeted thigh area for your treatment, your body composition, and your cosmetic goals. For instance, if you need excess skin and fat moved from the inner thigh versus the outer thigh.

Inner Thigh Lift

During an inner thigh lift, an incision will be made around your groin area. Then, any excess fat and skin will be removed. Oftentimes, people get a thigh lift in conjunction with liposuction to further remove fat from targeted areas.

Lastly, the areas of the inner thigh from the groin down to your knee will be contoured by removing loose skin and smoothing your skin over the thigh muscle. For inner and outer thigh lifts, deep support sutures are used to hold the new contour in place, then sutures are used to close the incision.

Outer Thigh Lift

During an outer thigh lift procedure, the incision will be strategically placed, so they’re hidden by most clothing and swimsuit types. Typically, incisions for outer thigh lifts will be made around the natural curve of the thigh and hip.

Outer thigh lifts are usually more complex, and they often involve recontouring of the buttocks. With outer thigh lifts, it is easier to maintain the same weight and positive effects of the surgery, because skin will be less elastic after the surgery.

Recovery from Thigh Lift Surgery

After your surgery, you will need to take some time for a healthy recovery. For the first couple of weeks after your surgery, the incision areas will be wrapped in bandages or dressing. You also might be dressed in a compression garment to reduce swelling and promote healing. Typically, small tubes will be places around the wound to stop the retention of fluid and blood.

Dr. Takowsky will also give you recovery instructions, so you can be better prepared to take care of your wounds and prevent complications. For optimal healing, it is imperative that you do not apply aggressive force or excessive motion to your incision area.

The most important time of your healing process will be the first two weeks, when you should move slowly and carefully to avoid pulling on your incisions. Down time after a thigh lift surgery is usually between 3 to 4 weeks, and about 6 weeks for full healing. With that said, you should plan to take about a month off of work, or longer, if your job is labor intensive.

Is a Thigh Lift the Right Surgery For You?

If you’ve tried tried diet and exercise to try and tone your thighs with no results, you might consider a thigh lift. Oftentimes, patients lose massive amounts of weight from bariatric surgery or dieting, which leads to saggy, wrinkled, and unproportioned thighs. Many weight loss patients elect for thigh lift surgery, because they feel anxious about loose and flabby skin, have difficulty fitting into clothing, or simply want better proportioned thighs. After your thigh lift surgery, clothing and swimwear will feel more comfortable. You will also look younger, healthier, and more curvy. You will also feel more confident to show off your legs in shorts and bathing suits.

Are You a Good Candidate for Thigh Lift Surgery?

If you have saggy thighs with excess skin, then chances are that you will be a candidate for thigh lift surgery - especially if you fit these qualities:
  • Your weight is generally consistent
  • You have excess skin and soft tissue around your inner or outer thigh
  • You don’t smoke
  • You have practical goals on what a thigh lift will accomplish
  • You are committed to healthy eating and exercising
  • You don’t have any medical conditions that could prevent healing or increase your risk of infection
  • You want a thigh lift surgery for yourself, and not because someone else is pressuring you into it

Having Realistic Expectations for Your Thigh Lift Surgery

It is important to remember that thigh lifts are not performed with the purpose of removing extra fat. You will need to opt for liposuction, in order to remove all of the excess fat in targeted areas. It’s usually recommended to have liposuction along with your thigh lift. You should also remember that your thigh lift will result in some visible scarring. Remember to discuss any of your concerns and image goals with Dr. Takowsky at your initial consultation.

The success of your thigh lift procedure will partially depend on choosing the right plastic surgeon. The thigh area is especially susceptible to tension and gravity. Incisions on the thighs can take longer to heal, because all of the weight in your legs are pulled down when you move around. With that said, choosing a plastic surgeon, who uses skilled incision techniques can positively impact your healing process. Dr. Gary Takowsky in Beverly Hills is a board-certified plastic surgeon and uses reliable and precise thigh lift techniques, tailored to your unique shape.
